Kinnaur ( Himachal Pradesh )

  • The tribal district of Himachal Pradesh, Kinnaur district is spreading through an area of 6407 square km having very ancient history. One can enjoy the visit of Kinnaur walking on the bank of the river Sutlaj. The most important and sensitive 'Hindustan-Tibbet Road' also passes through Kinnaur. Being a sensitive area, tourists have to get permit from Himachal Pradesh Government before visiting this region. From Shimla passing through Kinnaur, one can reach Manali after taking round of Lauhal-Spiti.

  • Sangla, 2,890 metre above sea level, is the biggest and worth seeing village of this area, which is 18 km away from Karcham. It has fields of saffron, orchards and on climbing higher, the picturesque rolling meadows spiked with iris and wild flowers in spring and dotted with shrubs of rhododendron in varying shades of pink. The peak of Kinnar Kailash charms the tourists. The fort like temple of goddess Kali-" Kamru Fort" can be observed from this place.

    Chitkul, 3450 metre above sea level, is the last village in the valley, which is situated 26 kms away from Sangla. Surrounded by thick birch (Bhojpatra) forests, this place is well known for its alpine meadows and gorgeous snow scenery.

    Powari is 70 kms away from Rampur and the last terminal point of the National Highway No.22.

    Recong Peo, situated 260 kms far from Powari and 2670 metre above sea level, is the district headquarters of Kinnaur. One can get permission from the sub-district headquarter office for visiting Kinnaur valley. Just near is Kalachakra temple having an idol of Lord Buddha from where the marvellous view of Kinnar Kailash can be seen.

    Kothi, located only 3 kms away from Recong Peo, is having a temple of Chandika Devi. In the lap of mountains and luxuriant cedars, the temple has an extraordinary art and sculpture. The golden idol of the deity is superb in grace.

    Kalpa, 2960 metre above sea level, is located 7 kms away from Recong Peo. Across the river facing Kalpa are the Kinnaur Kailash ranges. At the dawn when the crimson and golden rays of rising sun touch the snow-clad peaks, the scene becomes eye catching.

    Pangi is located 10 kms away from Recong Peo which passes through Chilgoza pine forests. Surrounded by apple orchards, Pangi has worth seeing temples like Shesh Nag and Buddhist temples.

    Ribba, 2745 metre above sea level, is on National Highway22 and is famous for its "vineyards and local "angora" made wines.
