Mandu ( Madhya Pradesh)

Mandu stands as testimony to the glorious history of India. It is situated in Vindhyachal mountain range at 2000 feet above sea level and spread over 13 sq km area. Deep valleys surround it from three sides. Mandu, exists as a live testimony to the entertainment and eternal love stories embedded in stones, was inhabited by Baz Bahadur. These monuments were built by Baz Bahadur as a symbol of love and in memory of his beloved Rani Roopmati. It also remained the choicest fort and entertainment place of Parmar kings especially King MunjDev and Bhoj. Many Muslim rulers and pleasure seekers came here and built many big palaces, court buildings, mosques and tombs. Mandu visit can be divided into three parts: Royal Palace, Rewa Kund Group and Central Group.

  • Central Group

    (1) Asharfi Mahal is located in front of Jami Mosque, which was initially a school of spirituallearning. Later, it got related to Glory Tower.

    (2) Jami Mosque is the most magnificent building of Mandu. It was built on the line of Damascus mosque's map. It is the biggest and most elegant building of Afghan architecture.

    (3) Tomb of Hoshangabad displays the beautiful network executed on marble stone. Prior to the construction of Taj Mahal, Shahjahan sent his architects here for the study of its shape creation.

  • Royal Enclave

( 1) Jahaz Mahal (Ship Palace) is an auspicious and attractive palace of Mandu. In the rainy season, when the ponds in its two sides get filled with water, with anchors in water, it appears as a ship. It was constructed by Ghiyas ud Din Khilji for his large harem (building for queens).

    (2) Hindola Mahal, situated near Jahaz Mahal, resembles a swing. Its walls are in the shape of slopes, which creates illusion of a swing. This was actually a Diwan-e-Khas of Sultans of Malwa. There is a charming ChampaBaoli, whose water emits fragrance of Jasmine flowers.

  • Rewa Kund Group

    (1) Rewa Kund had been a source of water supply to Roopmati Palace.

    (2) Baz Bahadur Palace is the palace where the mammoth courtyard and ground rooms are worth viewing. Here, songs and music functions for Roopmati and Baz Bahadur were held.

    (3) Roopmati Pavilion is situated on the highest summit of Mandu. From here, the queen used to glance at and enjoy the charm of river Narmada flowing at the foothills.
