Udaipur ( Rajasthan, North India )

Udaipur has been an ideal place for inspiration of countless artists, painters, poets and travellers. It is termed as City of Lakes. The foundation stone of Udaipur was laid by Maharana Udai Singh on 16th March 1559. The old city had initially had 11 gates, out of which only 5 gates in the city walls remained. Suraj Pole is the main entrance gate to the city. Every corner has temples. Udaipur is famous for Lehriya, the delicate striped sarees and turbans in various shades, colours and designs. Udaipur is known for its distinctive architecture, mammoth monuments, various lakes and chivalry.

  • City Palace

    City Palace, a gigantic structure of 30.4 metres high and 244 metres long, founded by Udai Singh. It has been constructed on a low rock at the bank of Lake Pichhola. The Bari Pole (Great Gate), brings one into the first court which leads to Tripolia (the triple arched gate), with 8 marble arches (Torans). The important part of the palace starts from Ganesh Dyodhi leads south to the fine Rai Angan (Royal Courtyard) with the Jewel Room. In the Manak Chowk, one can see Maharana Pratap's life history. The oldest part of the palace is the Dhuni Mata temple. Moti Mahal (known as Sheesh Mahal) has inlaid mirror work and the Krishna Vilas has four rows of painted scenes in miniature style. Bhim Vilas has a boldly striped floor and scenes from the Radha Krishna stories painted on the walls. South of the main palace is Shiva Niwas. Amar Vilas has exquisite terrace garden (Badi Mahal) on the fourth floor, with full grown trees around a square water tank in the central court.

  • Palace Museum

    Palace Museum The Palace Museum contains ' Jirah- Bakhtar' ( hard coverings over warrior's body), armours of the valiant Maharana Pratap and the drums and buggles of Rana Sanga

  • Mor Chowk

    Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) is situated near to Surya (Sun) temple, where the five glasses laid vivid mosaics of Peacock is worth seeing.

    Zanana Mahal (Queen's Palace) was built by Maharana Karan Singh in 1620. On left side is Rang Bhawan (the colourful hall) and on the right, there are three shrines

  • Crystal Gallery

    Crystal Gallery is located in Fateh Prakash Palace which overlooks the Durbar Hall. The gallery contains various coloured crystal objects which include a bed, the only one of its kind in the world along with a fabulous jeweled carpet.

  • Jag Mandir

    Jag Mandir built in 1651 amidst Lake Pichhola, is the island palace where once Prince Khurram, later known as Emperor Shah Jahan had sought shelter against his father emperor Jahagir

  • Jag Niwas

    Jag Niwas (Lake Palace Hotel) built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1746, was a summer residence of the previous rulers.

  • Saheliyon Ki Bari

    Saheliyon Ki Bari (Gardens of the Maids of Honour) was constructed by Maharana Sangram Singh II in 18th century. The main attraction of the garden is beautifully craved fountain "chhatri" made up of white marble surrounded by 4 black stone fountains in the middle of the garden.

  • Fateh Sagar

    Fateh Sagar an artificial lake with an eye catching view, originally built by Maharana Jai Singh in 1687 and later on reconstructed by Maharana Fateh Singh in 1888, hence it was named as Fateh Sagar. It's dam is 2800 ft long and its greatest depth is 30 feet.
