Gangotri (Uttarakhand)

  • Gangotri Dham is the place of origin of Ganga. It is believed that after severe penance by king Bhagirath, goddess Ganga descended on earth from heaven in the shape of a river. It is for this reason that river Ganga is also called Bhagirathi. This pilgrim place is 3140 meter above sea level.

  • Gangotri Temple Lacs of devotees visit this temple every year. It was built by Gorkha Commandar Amar Singh Thapa in 18th century.

Jalmagn Shivling is a Shiva Ling built by nature and is visible only when water of Ganga is reduced. It is said that Lord Shiva held Ganga in his matted hair here.

Gomukh Glacier is an originating place of Ganga. Ganga flows out of its massive cave. It is approachable by foot or mule.

Nandanvan Tapovan can be reached after a difficult climb from Gomukh glacier. This place, covered with velvety grass and foaming water streams, is so fascinating that tourists do not like to leave this place and return home.

Uttar Kashi, located on the banks of Bhagirathi, is an enchanting place on Gangotri travel route. Vishvanath Temple, Rudra Temple, Gyaneshwar Temple, Kuteti Devi temple and many other temples are situated in this spectacular city.
